Panorama of the corona virus crisis in Ecuador

Testimony of Latin American professionals about the corona virus crisis in their country

Note: Ecuador is among the hardest hit countries in Latin America, with a very serious health crisis that has affected several cities. As the specialists were overflowing with work, scientific journalist Tania Orbe Martinez, the correspondent for SciDev.Net and professor at the University of San Francisco de Quito, sent the analysis:
“Ecuador is the second country most affected by Covid-19 in Latin America, behind only Brazil. But if we take into account the number of inhabitants and the size of the territory, we are number one. Images of hundreds of corpses scattered across the streets, houses and hospitals of Guayaquil, the nation's most populous city, have been around the world. In Quito, our capital, and in the rest of the provinces, the situation is a little more controlled, but the health system, which was already struggling, is overflowing.
Quito, by the way, is the city I live. Here, Mayor Jorge Yunda respected the federal government's guidelines for responding to the pandemic. It was the first place to establish a curfew, suspend schools, close markets and prepare hostels for homeless people.
I believe that the government must continue with the drastic restrictive measures and, at the same time, offer assistance to families whose members cannot work or are unemployed. We also need some law that prevents companies making new layoffs. People need to abide by security measures and get informed through official and professional sources about what is happening.
The problem is that Ecuador's economic situation was already fragile before all of that. We have no cash reserves or emergency funds. We are a country that depends on the US dollar. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Census, only 30% of Ecuadorians of working age have a formal job. Another 30% remain in underemployment, with no fixed contract. The rest has no occupation at all. In my country, we either starve to death or die Covid-19, as many need to go out on the streets to sell something and survive ”.
